This is what I would ascertain as a bodice ripper that you would expect from the time period. Aggravating heroine, domineering hero whose only desire is to claim his woman, and too many steamy scenes that don't really serve any purpose.

This is merely too weird for what I'm currently in the mood for. I'm assuming tonally this is closer to old-school bodice ripper, where lust is the chief driving strength, and the heroine and hero just go at it constantly similar animals in heat, e'er with questionable consent (and then many mentions of phallus...). Anybody is morally loose, playing mind game and lying similar drinking water; I might've be able to stomach through the disjointed plot if I care about the characters, but the fluctuation of their romantic emotion is too hyperbolic (literally 'I tin can't leave without you, you're my Goddess.' on i page, then 'Y'all bowwow.' on the next—same goes for the heroine towards the hero) for me to relate or comprehend.

If The Pirate and the Infidel was one-half of its length, and with even merely one chemical element I can latch onto equally a reader, I might've enjoyed it as a kooky curiosity, only as it stands the aimlessness of it bores me.

Enthralling Story of Dearest and Deception—a Pirate Romance to treasure—a Keeper!

Winner of the Romantic Times Honour for Best English Historical Romance in 1990, this is a wonderfully complex tale of deception and love set in 17th century England in the Restoration catamenia when Charles 2 ruled England.

Lady Summer St. Catherine is an innocent, just not very lady like, young woman raised on the Cornish coast with her younger brother, Spencer (nicknamed Spider). With their mother expressionless and their male parent a wastrel, who spends all their money and all his time in London, they are left quite alone and cannot afford food, much less a servant. When Summer and Spider stumble into a smuggling opportunity, they take advantage of information technology in order to survive.

Soon afterwards, their father dies and Summer goes to London to stay with their aunt (a wonderful character). Information technology is there Summer learns her father has mortgaged away their dear home, Roseland. Her aunt, who is teaching her to be a lady, convinces her the manner out of her troubles is to marry a wealthy man. Summer takes on the part of a lady and sets her cap for the neighboring Cornish lord, Ruark Helford, a friend of the king. She manages to win Ruark's affections, both of them falling in dear. Ruark has no thought his new bride is a smuggler and when she confesses, his fierce atmosphere destroys their relationship. But Ruark'southward younger brother, Rory, a pirate, will come to Summertime'south rescue providing her all the love she can no longer have from Ruark.

Henley weaves an intriguing story of dearest and deception in an interesting fourth dimension in the history of England. She includes many rich historical details of the court of Charles Ii, including some infamous characters, and lots of steamy love scenes. Summer is a clever, courageous heroine who must deal with Ruark'due south over-the-top temper—and does. I loved this volume. Henley is a master of historic romance. Few romance writers today bring such rich (and accurate historical item to their historical novels. This is a well-told pirate tale. I highly recommend it.

Our heroine here is Lady Summertime (Cat) St. Catherine. She and her younger blood brother Spencer (Spider) scrabble out a semi-legal living on their father'southward bankrupt manor, while the sometime man gambles away everything they requite a damn about. Then they learn that the old cretin buried them in debt before he had the decency to stick his spoon in the wall. They don't even own the rags on their backs.

Called to London, Cat discovers that her Aunt Lil has fabricated her living on her back. Lil encourages Cat to find a powerful protector to save her brother'southward estates and name (Anybody run across a logic outcome? No? OK, I'll pretend I don't also).

Given a choice between Charles II and his crony Ruark Helford, lord of an estate that premises the one Cat grew up on, she makes the sensible selection.

Not.

She picks Helford. Information technology's presented every bit a decision based entirely on her attraction to the guy, simply let's get real. Kings in those days—in most days, to be honest—were so decorated scrabbling for funds for their lightheaded wars and other excesses that they were often more than a drain on their cronies' pockets than an asset. And so Helford is really the logical choice, even if Chuck would've been a more prestigious conquest.

Auntie Lil advises Cat to hold out for the all-time deal she tin can get, and so Cat

resists

teases Helford, hoping for carte blanche. Instead he offers wedlock.

Even better, Cat and Helford actually fall in honey—that's when True cat finally opens upward and tells him the truth—that she needs his influence to save her brother from prison, and his money to save the family unit manor from creditors. Thing is, anytime Ruark feels hurt, used, offended, outraged, or just generally doesn't get his own way…

One thing I like about this gal is she fights back, but it'south tough on the relationship, which goes down the

From there.

Enter Rory. He's Ruark's brother, only instead of being a stuffy

nonce noble, the guy's a pirate. In other words, this guy is everything True cat likes near Ruark, but he's not such a prat most her foibles.

So at present she's banging her husband's brother. Guilt trips and other nonsense abound; I'll acknowledge I skipped over some of the naval-gazing. But the fireworks in the primary relationship worked for me. Add in some imperial historical detail (largely to practise with Chuck II's LT adultery with Barbara Palmer, Countess of Castlemaine), and a little cloak and dagger and I was sold.

This story resonated emotionally, even tho some of the plot elements didn't brand sense (see spoiler), and fifty-fifty tho I saw the "twist" coming very early. 3.9 stars.

The volume opens with an extended dick joke. Barbara Castlemaine and Charles Ii (who evidently has a humongous pig) exercise poppers while they fuck. There are a few scenes of violence that are incredibly over the top: I'thou talking exploding corpses and genital mutilation. Most of the Summer/Ruark honey scenes are typical of the era (pretty rapey only she'southward into it), but instead of being offended by the misogyny I find information technology laughable. The women in this volume, particularly Summer, hate other women and then fucking much that it'due south really, actually funny. This volume is a batshit insane time capsule of an era of romance writing that has since passed.

Once in a while I become ill of the electric current trend of pleasant, overly tropey gimmicky romances with characters who are Good People With Good Politics, but I can't bring myself to read dark romance because a lot of that shit is just straight up abuse that's utterly humorless and lacks self-awareness. '80s/'90s bodice rippers really fill that hole when I want to read something fun and ridiculous and smutty, and this book is an exemplar of that menses.

This book was filled with the dramatic and catty court intrigue that I love so much. It takes place during the Restoration Period during the reign of Charles II. Our characters are intimates of the King, so we get a lot of the history of the monarch, not to mention London society. Nosotros go thru plague, the Great Burn of London, and the war with the Dutch. There was so much action and activity going on that I couldn't stop turning pages. I plan on giving some of her other works a gamble similar her Medieval Plantagenet series and even some of her about contempo piece of work to encounter if her style has changed.

This was a slower read then near my books. It was drawn out a little over the rex and his cout. I knew half manner through Rory and Rourk were the same person...it would accept been better if you couldnt figure out till very finish. But other than that a good read

I mean, if you're looking for a classic, this ain't it. If you're looking to be mildly amused past a bodice ripping romance where the heroine can't tell her husband is pretending to exist his pirate brother? This is it.

Both MC'due south are crazy af but sometimes y'all but like that kind of story. 🤷‍♀️

All of these characters are terrible, the plot is soo weird and this entire volume is so weird.

Establish at a thrift store, bought for the cover and my need to read some of the historical romance "classics." This was painful though.
